Mo' fas'er an' fas'er de' gator dey came He whistle an' holler an' call dem by name: "Ha, Gaston! Ha, Tiboy! Ha, Pierre an' Alcee'! Gee, Ninette! Gee, Suzette! Celeste an'Renee'!

To de top o' de porch to de top o' de wall, Make crawl, alligator, an' be sho' you don' fall." Like Tante Flo's cat t'ru de treetop he fly, W'en de big ole houn' dorg come a run hisse's by.

Like dat up de porch dem ole 'gator clim! Wit' de skiff full o' toy an' St. Nicklus behin'. Den on top de porch roof it soun' like de hail, W'en all dem big gator, done sot down dey tail.

Den down de chimney I yell wit' a bam, An' St.Nicklus fall an' sit on de yam. "Sacre!" he axclaim, "Ma pant got a hole I done sot ma'se'f on dem red hot coal."

He got on his foots an' jump like de cat Out to de flo' where he lan' wit' a SPLAT! He was dress in musk-rat from his head to his foot, An' his clothes is all dirty wit' ashes an' soot.
A sack full o' playt'ing he t'row on his back, He look like a burglar an' dass fo' a fack. His eyes how dey shine his dimple, how merry! Maybe he been drink de wine from de blackberry.

His cheek was like a rose his nose a cherry, On secon' t'ought maybe he lap up de sherry. Wit' snow-white chin whisker an' quiverin' belly, He shook w'en he laugh like de stromberry jelly!

But a wink in his eye an' a shook o' his head, Make my confi-dence dat I don't got to be scared. He don' do no talkin' gone strit to hi work, Put a playt'ing in sock an' den turn wit' a jerk.

He put bot' his han' dere on top o' his head, Cas' an eye on de chimney an' den he done said: "Wit' all o' dat fire an' dem burnin' hot flame, Me I ain' goin' back by de way dat I came."

So he run out de do' an, he clim' to de roof, He ain' no fool, him for to make one more goof. He jump in his skiff an' crack his big whip, De' gator move down, An don' make one slip.

An' I hear him shout loud as a splashin' he go, "Merry Christmas to all 'til I saw you some mo'!"

I recently went to see The Help (which was amazing, hilarious and just all-around fantastic) - and one of the tiny nuances that caught my attention were the well-loved fans the women had with them at church. There was something so pretty about them, so I of course immediately set out upon an intense Google search, and discovered the 'history' behind the paper flabellum. The hand-held fans were a vital part of worship in the American South, in a time where modern air conditioning was not a luxury afforded by most churches. And although frequently depicting images of The Last Supper, or a replica of one of Warner Sallman's well-known biblical scenes on the front; the backs were considered prime real estate for funeral homes, insurance companies or even the local Buster Brown - pretty much anyone hoping to gain the attention of the wholesome homemaker 'fanning away the heat' at the Sunday Morning sermon.

Never has a single image captured my heart in it's entirety until I discovered Larry Wamble's 'Perfect Block' drawing of Baton Rouge. As a Baton Rouge native and LSU Alum, I have an unmatched love for anything related to the city I call home. The print features all of my favorite local places, including my absolute favorite hang out in college - Bogie's Bar.

With the weather in Atlanta suddenly turning chilly, I thought I would share with you my current cold weather favorites. Since this season seems to be all about layers, I'm sticking with the motto: "The more, the merrier". Start with a great (not to mention affordable & ultra-versatile) pair of jeggings. This pair by BDG at Urban Outfitters couldn't fit the bill more. The dark wash means they can dress up or down, and the ultra slim fit, moderate-rise make them the perfect complement to boots or shooties. Next add a soft oversized blouse (I JUST purchased this one from Gap and I'm absolutely in love), a cozy sweater that hits about mid-thigh, and an awesome vest (fur is back (faux and real) and this one was a steal, $29.95 at Old Navy of all places - not exactly a performance fleece, Thank God.). Slip into a buttery leather bootie and pile on the accessories. I am personally 150% obsessed with all of Madewell's accessories right now. They are a dream to just pile on! Polish your look from being too boho with an incredible alligator hobo - so, so pretty & officially on my wish list! What are your current cold weather must haves?

Dry Shampoo.

Now, as a blonde with fine hair (don't get me wrong, I can absolutely tease it to the moon - it's a smoke and mirrors situation giving me all of the volume I achieve - you're all aware of my commitment to Ellnet) I have been cursed with the end-of-the-day lack luster, borderline grease pit most blondes face. Which, in my young, inexperienced junior high and high school days meant, on Fridays, I would take a shower in the morning - wash, blow dry and style my hair - and then repeat the whole hour long process after school to make it out in time for what I'm positive were spectacular Friday night plans.

Now, some of you might be thinking, "why wouldn't she just use the ol' baby powder trick?" to all of you I'd like to confirm: I was VERY familiar with the baby powder trick, but we all know, that's an in-an-emergency-I-need-to-be-somewhere-in-5-minutes fix, and I can't think of anyone wanting to walk around trying to impress anybody smelling like a baby's bottom. Except for maybe those of you over the age of 12 that think wearing Love's BabySoft is still appropriate - which is another issue entirely.

Since baby powder refuses to come in any other scent but baby powder, I was determined to find something that would de-grease my hair without leaving said fragrance. Enter Clubman's Talc Powder. I discovered Clubman's while getting a heinous updo for Homecoming in the 10th grade. It couldn't have been more of a Godsend! It did the exact same thing baby powder did but didn't smell like a baby!! I felt like my search was finally over. But, after the occasional Clubman's snafu, usually consisting of using too much, resulting in what I can only describe as a powdered wig that smelled like a 1940s barber shop, I grew tired of Clubman's and turned down a path of determination so fierce, I'd honestly be scared to add up how much money I have wasted on dry-shampoos over the years.

Bumble & Bumble's hair powder

More like spray paint for your hair. Makes hair sticky and leaves a weird color residue. Also, I caution anyone to actually venture out and use the colored versions. That to me just spells Halloween disaster, where instead of springing for the $40 hot pink wig, you thought you could get away with the $3 can of pink hairspray. Just buy the wig.

Oscar Blandi's dry shampoo

I absolutely love this product, however, I don't love that it is $22 a can/bottle. I do have the sprinkle cap (aerosol tends to clog) currently in my hair arsenal, however, it's a last resort. The light lemon scent is nice too because it's not at all overpowering and does help neutralize last night's bar hair smell.

TRESemme dry shampoo

The smell is WAY too overpowering. It's as if you've actually put the fragrance concentrate for TRESemme in your hair. Also, the degreasing benefits only last around 2-3 hours. You're not getting past lunch with this bad boy.

Rene Furterer Naturia dry shampoo

Don't be fooled by the Parisian label. This is simply an $8 waste of time. While the scent is subtle and clean, it leaves a thick, powdery film on your hair.

Any and all "refreshing mists"

Mix some leave in conditioner with water in a spray bottle and you'll get the same effect. I've tried just about every refreshing mist under the sun and the only benefit I've found from using them is removing smells from hair. None, I repeat, NONE remove oil.

Pssssst Dry Shampoo (aka the best hair product ever invented)

I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that Pssssst is the single best thing to ever happen to my hair. Every single one of my girlfriends I have turned on to Pssssst have been instant believers and swear by it. It's $6 at CVS or Walgreens. There was a Bed Bath & Beyond that carried it, but was discontinuing to carry it a few weeks ago, and had it on sale for $2 a can. I was with my best friend, and fellow Pssssst devotee, and we cleaned them out. 9 cans to be exact. Besides being able to Pssssst and re-Pssssst your hair without issue, it's virtually unscented, doesn't leave a thick residue and leaves your hair soft and ready to restyle (if you even need to) after use. Pssssst is a life saver.

The Jemma Kidd line at Target is AMAZING! I am completely in love with this new lip gloss, if not purely because of the name - "Sassy"!! It's not sticky, super pigmented and stays on your lips longer than 10 seconds. The color is a pretty, nude pink that manages not to wash me out, despite my pale winter complexion, although I am a total cheater - I never leave the house without a little bit of bronzer... Which by the way, I may or may not have already given you the low-down on my faves when it comes to bronzers... if not, let me catch you up to speed...

I am a devoted Bare Minerals girl and ALWAYS swirl on a tiny bit of warmth after applying my foundation. Then, depending on the season, I layer on either Tarte Cheek Stain in Sunkissed (warm weather) or Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Bronze (cold weather). I like the stain for the summer because it works well with humidity and stays on really nicely, the brick works best in colder weather when skin is a little dry because it sits on top of the skin, disguising the cold weather lack-luster. I highly recommend investing in both!

A Christmas gift and my current read

Alright, I realize that my last post is from SEPTEMBER – which honestly is unacceptable. I have been so busy trying to get acclimated in my role at a new job, then there was Christmas, the list goes on. I know ya’ll are really busy too, so you can relate to the fact that something had to give, and unfortunately that something, for me, was Southern Flair. HOWEVER, I have decided that my New Years resolution will be to blog… more. I would make a flippant promise to post every week, or a certain amount a month, or I could get really overly ambitious and promise to make a post everyday. But, when I set a goal, I like it to be attainable (and it’s unlikely I’ll be less “busy” in 2010) – so here it is, my New Years resolution:

My absolute favorite - the mint julep

I am a huge fan of Tervis Tumblers! But now, I can safely say I am OBSESSED with them! Tervis has recently come out with a slew of Southern-inspired designs and I plan on snagging them all...

1970s Disco Pimp...

...What would happen if my 16-year-old little sister was allowed to redecorate her entire room - all by herself. She has recently developed an infatuation with all things bright pink and zebra... Luckily (or so I would like to believe), Pop (that's my baby-sister) has me as her personal decorator! I put together ump-teen storyboards for her room until we had reached one that was equal parts stylish and equal parts pink-black-and-white-zebra-explosion. All of the room planning took place before she left for a two-week stay at camp. Immediately, we Designed-On-A-Dime/Trading-Spaces this mama all week, so the room will be all set to be revealed Friday, when she gets home from camp. Since she is in the wilderness until Friday, I am sharing her room re-do (and failed storyboards) with you now (with real pictures and before/after to come soon)! The room isn't 100% complete, we are still looking for a new, taller dresser (Ikea has a serious possibility) and a new TV stand thing, but it's looking pretty stinkin' good!

That is my hilarious aunt in the corner - she was very excited to be at the zoo... ha!

This morning we got up at the crack of 9am (I consider that early when vacationing...) and drove to the San Diego Zoo! I was very excited since it is supposed to be amazing... and... it was!! Number one, it's HUGE - and we have the Atlanta Zoo, which is pretty big - but I'm not sure it can compete with San Diego.

Number two, when you first walk in, you are surrounded by GORGEOUS peacocks (I think you are all aware of my peacock fetish)...

Number three, there was an entire family of monkeys!!!

One of the younger monkeys was so cute - showing off, doing backflips for the crowd!

While we were there, we took the "Skyfari" across the zoo, which gives you an aerial view of all of the animals, and gives you a nice little break from walking in ridiculous, but adorable wedges that you decided to wear to the zoo.. Like an idiot.

When we were all zooed out we drove through Balboa park and wished we could have stopped and wandered through all of the museums, but we had to make it back in time for me to make delicious pasta salad to go with some yummy grilled chicken made by my Dad and uncle.

1 pkg (7 oz) prepared refrigerated pesto

1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil (this absorbs into the pasta, so you can add more if needed after refrigeration)

1 tbsp Caesar dressing

1 pkg baby Roma tomatoes, quartered

1 cup green onion, chopped

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 pkg Julienne cut sun-dried tomatoes, rough chop

1/2 small can diced black olives

1 pkg pine nuts

1/2 cup grated Parmesan

salt & pepper to taste

I modeled this recipe after the pesto pasta salad at Le Madeline's - fave. It makes a TON, serve cold - perfect for a quick lunch or snack!

California: Day 2 - San Diego Old Town Market

This morning, we caught up on some sleep (to counteract the jet lag) and grabbed some lunch at the famous In-n-Out Burger! It was sooo yummy - comparable to Atlanta's Five Guys Burgers and Fries.

After lunch, we headed to the San Diego Old Town Market. It was awesome - it felt like you were walking through an authentic Mexican bazaar, only really clean! I found some fun gifts for friends and amazing Mexican tin folk art.

We also ran across a very cool surf shop with the owner's personal collection of vintage skateboards hanging from the ceiling. There were probably at least 2000 boards all over the store - it was incredible! I wish we could have stayed longer at Old Town, but we had to get back to go to our ultra-fancy family dinner at Vivace.

The food was unbelievable and EVERYONE got their own dessert, which were quickly passed around the table so we could all have a "taste". Tomorrow we are getting up early to go to the San Diego Zoo!!

California: Day 1 - Travel to San Diego

We flew to San Diego at 1:15pm and arrived at 8:30pm and were STARVING!

So, we found the first Mexican restaurant that looked fun and delicious - Fred's Mexican Cafe! It was so good! The chips were crunchy and hot and they had an entire offering of fresh salsas!

The decor in Fred's is very cool - beer bottle chandeliers among regular chandeliers, Mexican tin mirrors and wall medallions - very cool.

After filling up on chips, salsa and giant burrito platters, we made our way to The Four Seasons Aviara Villas (I'm so spoiled - I know) to go to bed so we could wake up early and explore San Diego!

I will miss every single thing about college. Four years is not enough.

Cotton is a huge crop for Southern farmers and an essential part of any Southerner's wardrobe. From seersucker to blue jeans, cotton is the the most widely used fiber for clothing in the US. It's inexpensive, breathable and oh-so-comfortable. The best thing about a plain white t-shirt is you can wear it to sleep in, wear it working around the house or even throw one on with your best blue jeans and some fun jewelry for a night out! I probably have more t-shirts that one person should legally be allowed to have, but what can I say, it's hot down here and they're the most versatile thing I own!

Southern Souvenirs: Day 6 - Mason Jars

Mason jars are widely used all over the South, most commonly for pickling or canning. However, the best use I've found for an old-fashioned mason jar is for sipping my favorite ice cold beverage, which happens to be seltzer water and crystal light strawberry drink mix - so delicious! Widemouthed jars have been Southern kitchen staples since the Ball Corporation began producing them in 1884, the company makes 585,000 mason jars each day.

History of the Mason Jar
1858 - John Mason invents the first canning jar with a screw top; his patent expires in 1879, opening the market for competition

1884 - Brothers Frank, Edmund, George, Lucius and William form Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing in New York State and start making mason jars. The company moves to Indiana three years later

1909 - The first Ball Blue Book, a primer on home canning, is published (an updated version can be purchased at freshpreserving.com)

1918 - The Ball brothers bequeath a small college in Muncie to the state of Indiana; the school is later renamed Ball State University

Southern Souvenirs: Day 5 - Pecan Pralines

As sugary as they are Southern, pecan pralines are a Southern tradition that began in New Orleans, LA in the 19th century. Early "pralines" were actually not made with pecans, instead, whole almonds were individually coated in caramelized sugar. It wasn't until French settlers brought this recipe to Louisiana, where both sugar cane and pecan trees are plentiful, that New Orleans chefs substituted pecans for almonds, added cream to thicken the confection, and transformed the praline to what is now thought of as a traditional pecan praline.
If you can't make it to New Orleans for the original, pralines are fairly easy in your very own kitchen:

Ingredients
2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup evaporated milk
2 cups pecan pieces and halves
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 tablespoons chilled butter, cut in pieces

Preparation
Combine sugar, milk, and water in a 2-quart saucepan; heat to boiling stirring constantly. Cook until mixture reaches soft ball consistency (235°).Remove from heat; stir in pecans, vanilla, and butter. Immediately drop by tablespoons onto wax paper.

Or, if you don't think candy making is your cup of tea, you can have the sweet treats delivered right to your door from Aunt Sally's in New Orleans.

Southern Souvenirs: Day 4 - Sweet Tea

Some will argue that you can't make sweet tea sweet enough, and as un-southernly as it may be, I prefer to add my own sugar to my tea! There. I said it. Sweet tea is a staple beverage in the South. My grandmother always has a fresh pitcher in the fridge made from Luzianne tea bags and sweetened just perfectly. We love sweet tea so much in the South, someone went ahead and turned it into a delicious elixir you pour with water and tastes just like the real thing only with a little tingle left in your mouth. I am a lover of all teas, green, black, hot, cold, fruity... the list goes on! The best place I know to get a fresh glass of sweet tea is my grandmother's, but if I can't get that - I love the tea at Chick-Fil-A in Atlanta. For those of you who are inexperienced in the tea department, I suggest the following:

- Go to the grocery and find a box of Luzianne (specially blended for iced tea - of course)

for the love of all things Southern - DO NOT use Crystal light instant tea mix - or anything instant for that matter!

- Brew the tea and pour into a pretty pitcher

- Add just enough sugar so there is a hint of sweetness to it

- Fill a tall glass or mason jar with ice and pour in the tea

- Add additional sugar and stir with a long iced tea spoon

- Sip and enjoy!

Southern Souvenirs: Day 3 - Seersucker

In 1907, a New Orleans clothier created a light-weight suit made from blue and white striped cotton which he named "seersucker", from the Persian words ‘milk and sugar’. The fabric was originally worn only by the poor in the U.S. until it was made popular by college students. Soon after, it quickly became mandatory summer attire for Southerners.

Seersucker even made it’s way to Washington as a result from the need to make hot Washington summers bearable for Southern senators. During the summer months in Washington, Southern senators would trade in their dark wool suits for lighter garments made of linen and cotton. With the introduction of air-conditioning the wearing of seersucker in Washington was forgotten until the late 1990s when Mississippi Senator Trent Lott decided to revive the tradition by selecting a "nice and warm" day in the beginning of June he named Seersucker Thursday. Seersucker Thursday is still honored by all Southern senators each June in Washington.

In the South, it is only appropriate to wear seersucker between Easter and Labor Day and widely considered a fashion faux-pas to wear it any other time. The most common color for seersucker is white and blue, although there are other colors available.

Bourbon is an American whiskey made from corn and named for Bourbon County, Kentucky where it was first produced. Most bourbon is still made in Kentucky today. Although bourbon has been made in Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia, it is estimated that 95% of the world's bourbon is distilled and aged in Kentucky. Bardstown, Kentucky, is called the Bourbon Capital of the World and is home to the annual Bourbon Festival in September.

Because there is not a very well-documented history of bourbon, there are many conflicting legends. Some credit the invention of bourbon to a pioneering Baptist minister and distiller named Elijah Craig. who is said to also be the first to age the distillation in charred oak casks, "a process that gives the bourbon its reddish color and unique taste." In Bourbon County, Kentucky, an early distiller, named Jacob Spears, is credited with being the first to label his product "Bourbon whiskey." Is is likely that there is no one true "inventor" of bourbon, but the stories are fun to share.

My favorite drink happens to be a mint julep, but when that isn't available, I love a good bourbon and diet Coke, preferrably Maker's Mark (made in Loretto, Kentucky) or Jack Daniels (made in Lynchburg, Tennessee).

Blue-and-white porcelain, or Qinghua Ci, is a 700-year-old Chinese tradition of creating beautiful and graceful vessels that are shaped and glazed by hand and decorated with classic motifs. In the South, we have dubbed these pretty jars, "ginger jars" because some of them were originally designed to hold ginger. The most popular style of ginger jar in the South is blue and white, and most Southern decorators follow the rule of having at least 1 blue-and-white piece in every room of the house. Although blue-and-white is the most popular in the Southern United States, there are many other colors, and each with their own meaning:

Yellow jars - a traditional gift to China's Emperor, yellow was the Emperor's color and represents a wish for health and long life
Red jars - symbolizes a wish for happiness and prosperity to the recipient
Jade jars - a traditional color for ginger jars
Golden jars - known to be accompanied by elaborate floral motifs
Black jars - often feature chrysanthemum patterns
White jars - a traditional Chinese wedding gift, often bearing the Dragon (the groom) and the Phoenix (the bride) on either side, it offers wishes of happiness, prosperity and fertility to the new couple

It is not only the color that is significant in the different jars, but what is depicted on them as well:

Last night, after a Murder She Wrote Marathon (just kidding), I was watching the Antiques Road Show, which happens to be somewhat nostalgic for me because I used to watch it with my dad when I was little and we would guess how much something would be worth... Anyway, this man had a small collection of about 12 posters, called Work Incentive posters, from the 1920s. I was really drawn in by these incredible, brilliantly-colored posters, featuring catchy slogans and amazing graphic images. So, I did a little research and discovered the cool history behind the pretty posters. I thought you may want a mini-edgeamacation of your own, so...

(my commentary is the tiny bold print at the end of a few paragraphs - I wish I could have somehow superimposed my handwritten scribbles on the info because of course, that would look much cooler, but oh well...)

"The Mather Work Incentive Posters, are striking and unique American posters printed in Chicago between 1923 and 1929. The posters were designed to improve worker productivity and curb turnover during a time of economic expansion and plentiful jobs. The traditional American virtues the posters promote are as relevant today as they were 80 years ago and represent a unique chapter in American advertising and economic history.

While the posters can be seen as workplace propaganda or camp Americana, they are perhaps most interestingly viewed as a visual expression of the idealism and optimism of the rising nation. President Calvin Coolidge pithily summed up in two sentences the ideology of the era in his 1925 speech to the Society of American Newspaper Editors: "The chief business of the American people is business...The chief ideal of the American people is idealism." How complicated the world has become...

This attitude sparked a movement known as Welfare Capitalism, in which employers voluntarily offered incentives such as reduced hours, higher wages, health insurance, and paid vacations in return for greater productivity and worker loyalty, while blunting the arguments of labor unions and socialists.

Charles Mather, a Chicago-based printer seeking to use up excess capacity, saw opportunity in the movement and started selling factory owners subscriptions to his poster series. The annual "campaigns" found ready acceptance in a workplace accustomed to Madison Avenue advertising techniques in government production posters recently seen during World War I. Mather's series however, was the first widespread employer sponsored program with the goal of corporate success and employee development.

Outstanding American artists such as Willard Frederick Elmes and Hal Depuy were commissioned to boldly employ familiar images such as racing trains, running football players, and mischievous clowns alongside simple and direct headlines. Many of Mather's artists were heavily influenced by the "Plakatstil," or Poster Style, made famous in Germany by Lucian Bernhard and Ludwig Hohlwein. The clean lines of the 1929 Mather posters in turn anticipated the streamlined and dynamic Art Deco designs that would dominate the next decade. That is incredible... he probably had no idea just HOW influential he would be.

Artist Frank Beatty's "The Perfect Finish" (1929) depicts a sailing crew hard at work during a boat race. The subtitle, a classic example from Mather's lexicon, warns, "No job's done till it's ALL done," succinctly communicating through word and image the need for teamwork to beat the competition.

Also featured is Hal Depuy's poster featuring bold imagery from America's favorite pastime, baseball. "Over the Plate!" (1929) depicts a pitcher in mid-throw and states, "Winners never have to say they're good - their work proves it. RESULTS TALK." The baseball metaphor plays directly to the American worker, who knew the difference between a pitcher who throws balls or strikes.

Employers changed the posters weekly based on current events, holidays or factory problems. A catalog organized the posters by theme, with cautionary categories ranging from laziness, responsibility, mistakes, and rumors to fire prevention and even practical joking. With their fresh graphics, surprising metaphors and over-the-top but thought-provoking platitudes, the posters demanded attention. How much do you love the "cautionary categories" - ha!

Mather created approximately 350 different images in seven annual campaigns before the series ended abruptly with the stock market crash in October of 1929. By January 1930, jobs were increasingly hard to find, and employers did not have the funds or the need to motivate workers as they had in the Twenties.

"Our exhibition of Mather's posters is timely as we reexamine our national values in this election year," comments gallery owner Jim Lapides. "Even today we are struck by their graphic beauty, old fashioned American imagery and homespun wisdom. Although they reflect on an era with different challenges, their message of idealism and working smart is both refreshing and inspiring."

These are just a few of the posters I thought were exceptionally pretty, it's funny how all of these slogans still apply today. I would LOVE to hang one of these beauties on my wall as a reminder to "strut my stuff" or that "hoping beats moping".

Rosanna is a self-taught photographer specializing in alternative photographic processes, specifically Polaroid SX-70 manipulations, emulsion transfers, and digital infrared photography. The Polaroid SX-70 manipulations were created by projecting a slide image onto Polaroid time zero film using a Daylab unit. As the film was developing, the image was manipulated using a sharp tool, thus giving it a "painterly effect." Polaroid discontinued time zero film in 2005, so each archival print is very unique and truly a collector's item. The emulsion transfer process involves placing Polaroid 669 film in very hot water to "lift" the emulsion layer from the photographic paper. The emulsion layer in then transferred onto tile or watercolor paper and manipulated to give it a wrinkled effect. Her digital infrared images were created using an infrared filter on her camera. The filter turns anything with chlorophyll white so the result is a summer scene which looks like a beautiful winter scene.

This is an awesome ring. It has all it's parts, gears, wheels and ruby jewels, with the gold stem. The ladies watch is from the 30's-60's but has all it's parts and they work and turn and move. If you are into Steampunk, you know how hard it is to get a watch apart without stripping out the gears, stems and wheels. I purposely only embellished this one with the brass oval floral adjustable ring. It makes such a great statement, it didn't need anything else.

This garden flower locket necklace looks just like something that would have been discovered in your aunt's jewelry box. It is made of vintage findings; the brass locket and lucite daisy cabochon date from the 1960's. Amy is fairly new to the jewelry design world, but not to dabbling in art. She has painted (watercolors) and made mosaics for years. She started making jewelry as gifts for her oldest daughter and her friends last spring and the response to her Etsy shop has been so positive that she didn't have to look for a job. This IS her day job! She loves what she does - from discovering incredible vintage findings to putting together little wearable bits of whimsy. Bryn has been sewing and designing since she was a child. She has always enjoyed working with her hands. Beautiful fabrics and colors inspire her and she enjoys making useful, everyday things beautiful. She has a degree in Costume Design. She also has three little boys, so she works whenever she gets a chance... a few minutes here and there. Her husband will soon be a Chaplain in the Army, so they'll be back in military life. These fun lavender pillows are printed with the letters of the alphabet or with some pretty flower designs. Pillows are about 3.5 by 3.5 inches, the outside is 100% silk, and there is a cotton layer on the inside. They are filled with delicious smelling dried lavender buds. I use different silks to print the letters and images on, such as crepe de chine, silk noil, dupioni or silk broadcloth. Backing is hand dyed silk in a coordinating color. Kati has a degree in Textiles and a background in Graphic Design. A couple of years ago she decided to start her own company, Artful Beginnings LLC. As a mom she is always surrounded by amazing artwork - on the fridge and in piles on the shelf, the walls and everywhere else. Her original idea was to custom print kid's artwork on silk and then turn it into scarves, table runners, pillows and others. After a chance conversation with a friend in a wedding related business she thought Kati should develop some wedding designs as well. When I was a boy, I thought an all-day sucker should last all day. Mine never did. Sunday sermons and English peas, on the other hand, seemed to last an eternity. At fifteen, I thought the blonde in my history class would be mine forever. However, after a couple of weeks I was history in her book.

I guess I've always been partial to things with staying power. A good hat, for instance, seems to hold its own. A well-made leather saddle will outlast both your horse and your ability to get on it. Good upbringing seems to stick with you, and true friendships last a lifetime.

When I went into business, I wanted to make things that would last and become more meaningful as time goes by... things that would be around long enough to be handed down to your children and grandchildren and be cherished as family heirlooms. That's important to me.

So, how long will something last? If we're talking about a streak of good luck, sunny weather or a bull market on Wall Street... don't bet the family farm on what the experts say. But, I reckon If we're talking about a good friendship or a Colonel Littleton product, you can pretty well expect them to last for a long, long time.

And, if for some reason it doesn't, we'll make it right."

Sometimes you're reminded that people care about people and making something that is built to last. It's a tough thing to hold onto today, the truly important things in life, like family and friends and the time you spend with them.

Carissa started sewing, as most people did, as a kid in home economics. She hated it! She hated following a pattern and hated following directions. She wanted to do it her way, her way was better! What got her into trouble then, has helped her to grow a successful business. She never uses patterns and loves to come up with new designs. She is the mom of two, very active, little boys. On the weekends, she is an intensive care unit nurse. Carissa loves her sewing as it gives her a wonderful outlet for creativitiy. All of you are aware of my love affair with Target... well, yesterday, I was in the soap aisle and spotted THESE little beauties! I am obsessed! Motif's motto: No more boring countertops! They couldn't have said it any better! And the scents - amazing! I chose the bottle with the pretty green label + even prettier scent - olive leaf and coriander! So fresh and clean! Did I mention it's only $3!! These perfectly package, subtly scented soaps would make amazing hostess gifts (pair with ANY decorative kitchen towel, fun colored spatula, WHATEVER!)! I'll definitely be heading back to Target to scoop a few more Motif hand soaps up!

Established in 2008, www.nolatiles.com is a project conceived by Chris & Nicolle Psilos on the idea of using historic New Orleans street tiles as a basis for art and home décor. This whole thing really evolved out of their love for New Orleans. Using such a unique piece of the city as a basis for their work makes it extremely enjoyable to create the pieces. Getting started was an extremely intimidating process because they really never considered themselves “artists” and basically taught themselves everything through trial and error. They spent lots of time researching many different processes until they decided on their final items: coasters, magnets, plaques and ornaments/displays. Everything is created in their home and all “raw materials” (with the exception of the heavy duty magnet paper) is purchased over the counter at stores/markets around the city. The most crucial ingredient is the actual picture of the letter or number that they're using at the time. They literally took thousands of pictures and filtered them down to about 50 or so different images that they use. Even though they've only been at this for less than a year, they can say with confidence that they now DO feel like “artists” and are working tirelessly to improve the items they create!

Sharon is a 37 year old Histotechnologist from Nebraska (she makes microscope slides for Veterinary Pathologists.) She has a BFA in sculpture and art history and has done everything under the sun-from ceramics to welding to glassblowing and now is addicted to printmaking. She's married to an amazing guy who runs his own business (with help on the books from her), Coffee Emergency, and is a master coffee roaster. Yum! Together they are raising two kitties and a very agreeable Wire Fox Terrier named, Otis. Sharon's only desire is to have more time to create the ideas that flood into her mind and the unlimited energy it would require.

Never set foot in Blockbuster again! - although I'm pretty sure most people already live by that motto... I've never truly been a fan of Blockbuster... with their "membership cards" and their "late fees" and the way they act like "everyone that comes into the store are movie theives, on a mission to make off with scratched and used copies of movies" - give me a break.

Anyway! I am officially in LOVE with Redbox! I was a little skeptical at first - I figured it was like the $3 movie bin at Wal-Mart that is surrounded with displays of newly-ish released movies, like Mean Girls or Inside Man, so you get all excited but then there's nothing but Hallmark originals and awful 20-minute long cartoon movies you've never even heard of in the $3 bin... major let down. I just ASSUMED that's what Redbox was - but I couldn't have been more wrong!

It's $1 (+sales tax) NEW RELEASES! I LOVE it! I don't have the luxury of Netflix, being that I am a poor college student, so Redbox is the perfect thing!

1. Redbox machines are popping up everywhere: Wal-Mart, grocery stores, my dad says he's even seen one in McDonalds!

2. It's $1 for every night you have the movie out (Blockbuster is $4 for most 1-day rentals)

3. You can return the movie to ANY redbox rental machine (Blockbuster makes you take it back to the one it came from)

4. It's NEW RELEASES!!

LUCKILY someone else thought this sweet cotton candy treat was picture worthy because MY camera was taken (back by the rightful owner - who now has 2 cameras because his work gave him one... but I'm not bitter or anything)... Wal-Mart has the cutest Easter goodies right now (that could be used for other spring-y things too)! Like THIS yum dilly cotton candy! Can you say, "little girl's birthday party"? The packaging is sooo adorable and I was so pleasantly surprised to see something like this in Wal-Mart (because as most of you know, I am a Target-addict)... So.. Go on Wal-Mart!
